Melody Mena is a nurse who says she voted, but she didn't know who she was voting for. She later became instrumental in getting legislation introduced in Congress for her association, which represents registered OR nurses.
This video shows a speech Melody made to AORN, her nurse association, about her evolution into political activism. She tells about building a relationship with her representative and all the things she did. She later ran for County Commissioner in Georgia. As for the experience, she says: It’s like a breath of fresh air to meet people from different walks of life who care about things and who are there to make a difference in the way our country and our local government is run. Every politician I have met can relate to me in some way and I can relate to them. We see them in the media and they become some kind of figurehead that’s very intimidating. But when you meet them, they are normal people. Most of the general public doesn’t get involved in politics and doesn’t like it. They think all politicians are crooks. That’s not true. I’ve been surprised and found quite the contrary. They will at least listen to you. There are big differences between Republicans and Democrats, but they all have the people in mind, just in different ways.
