Sarah Dufendach was
administrative assistant
to Rep. David Bonior.
Later she was Chief of
Legislative Affairs for
Common Cause, the
citizens advocacy group.
The kind of thing he (the Congressman) looks for that’s different from a lobbyist is a
personal story, a personal circumstance. Something where a piece of legislation would
affect somebody’s life. Sometimes lobbyists can put things in terms that are very canned,
very perfect. We don’t look for perfect. We would rather have somebody write on a paper
bag about something that is real to them than on a nice flashy glossy piece of stationery
from a lobbyist downtown because that may or may not be real. But if somebody takes
the time to call or include a personal story or a picture of themselves, that lets us know
they really care and we will care in kind.
