Rep. Don Brown is
an insurance agent
who serves in The
Florida House of
Representatives. In
this interview he
explains how
powerful agents
can be when they
communicate with
the person they
can vote for.
Q. You get tons of mail. How do you sort through it?
A. If it is from my district, it gets No. 1 priority. If it is
from the State of Florida but outside of my district,
that is second. Those from outside Florida we
reserve to the end.

Q. But you are never going to get to that last batch, right?
A. Correct.
Q. You get a lot of paid professional lobbyists coming by, what do you
want from a volunteer like an insurance agent that is different from the
paid professional lobbyist?
A. If I get a constituent, who is here to lobby on an issue, and I have a
paid lobbyist in my office, they will be asked to step outside and wait
until my constituent’s issues are dealt with.  We give far greater priority
to our constituents than the paid lobbyist.  We give the paid lobbyist our
time, we give them our attention, but constituents come first.
Q. OK, but what do you want to hear from insurance agents?
A. How they believe proposed legislation is going to effect them.  What
things are like in the real world.  We have many opportunities to get the
technical aspects of legislation explained to us.  What we want to hear
from constituents is, “What do you believe that this is going to do to
you, in the way you conduct your business and the way you conduct
your life, in the real world.”
